Caroline talks about her using email to support her through tough times: I found myself hospitalised for a PTSD, six years after having experienced physical and psychological traumas during a humanitarian mission. Discharged from there, I was lucky enough to find, entirely by chance, an email support network. No limits on the length of meetings, no days to wait to get an appointment, no need to get to know the support person or develop a relationship. Rather a certain knowledge that someone would receive my messages and would answer rapidly. The possibility to say everything anonymously whenever I want and without risking a relationship and especially an essential written trace of it all. Conclusion: nine months of exchanges of several hours of writing per day and more than 200 pages later, in parallel with a specialised post-traumatic therapy, I saw the light at the end of the tunnel. What about you? Are you isolated in the field or do you feel alone even within your own team ? Do you " feel weird " sometimes but don't dare talk to anyone about it? Do you think that you are taking alcohol, tobacco or drugs to an abusive extent and don't know what to do about it ? Do you feel depressed, discouraged and would like to communicate with someone about it ? Do you suspect that you have contracted or are worried about AIDS, and need more information in all confidentiality ? Have you a colleague who shows signs of distress and you need helpful advice on what to do? Having returned from a field mission, were you disappointed by the indifference of those around you and their lack of interest in what you had to say about your experience ?
Or perhaps you would just like to chat anonymously about this and that, to help you relax after days or weeks of difficult and sometimes unrewarding work.
Then this e-mail support service is for you!
We are a team of volunteer counselors with humanitarian experience who are at your disposal to listen, share and inform you with complete discretion and confidentiality, and following the norms professional standards. The team answers in English, French and Spanish.
